When: 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 September 2015
Where: The Brudenell Social Club, 33 Queen’s Road, Headingley, Leeds LS6 1NY
We’re excited to be promoting the Leeds date for Jessica Pratt and Kevin Morby.
In a matter of months since Jessica Pratt released her Drag City debut, On Your Own Love Again, the world has caught on to, and is decidedly enamoured by, the inimitable songs and sounds this guitar-playing and singing songbird has created.
On Your Own Love Again is an enchanting and involving listen – arresting from first strum and demanding of repeated listens. And with the audience demand-o-meter banging in the red following a most successful spring European tour, we’re pleased to announce that Pratt is coming back, baby!
If the equilibrium brought on by the forthcoming summer solstice isn’t enough to centre your mind and body, all those in the UK and Scandinavia can rest even easier knowing that Jessica’s beguiling voice and harmonious guitar pleasantry will be visited upon them once again, beginning at the end of August and into September!
‘Folksy songs that – tape hiss an all – are marginally out of time. They sit neatly alongside Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, Nico’s Chelsea Girl and Angel Olsen; ethereally beautiful with a dark undercurrent… but no one sounds quite like this’ – the Guardian
Two albums in, and the recordings under his own name have a rootsy, psychedelic feel more akin to his former posse Woods, the vocal lethargy of Lou Reed and the guitar intricacies of Steve Gunn. Kevin Morby called his solo debut Harlem River (2013, Woodsist) a love letter to his then home New York City where the album was recorded. A move to Los Angeles later that year spawned Still Life (2014, Woodsist), once again produced by Rob Barbato (Cass McCombs, Darker My Love) who adds his signature guitar and bass playing to the album.
Morby is also once again joined by Justin Sullivan (The Babies) on drums and percussion. Sullivan is a fixture in Morby’s live band, which completed a full U.S. tour in January of 2014, supporting Cate Le Bon. Solo artist (and Le Bon guitarist) H. Hawkline handled bass duties for Morby on the tour and contributes bass to three songs on the record that were a live staple. Multi-instrumentalist Will Canzoneri (Cate Le Bon, Cass McCombs, Jessica Pratt), who also performed live with Morby on the Le Bon tour and who was a contributer on Harlem River, contributes piano and organ to the album. The album also features a prominent horn section on Parade and Amen.
‘Still Life is steeped in Dylan’s back-to-basics period at the turn of the ’70s, carefully adorned but never skeletal; from the beating-heart bassline that sits underneath Drowning to the drunken horns that close out the eight-minute Amen, Still Life is sumptuous, slightly rickety, offhandedly gorgeous’ – Pitchfork
