We’re delighted to be working once again with H!M favourite Kiran Leonard.
Kiran Leonard is a mercurially talented 18-year-old musician from Oldham. His debut album, Bowler Hat Soup, was released on Hand Of Glory in late 2013 as a limited run of 300 vinyl copies. His music has won acclaim from publications as diverse as The Guardian, NME, Pitchfork, The Line Of Best Fit and Mojo, while his debut album was featured by 6 Music as Album Of The Day and Kiran was invited to perform on both the Marc Riley and Lauren Laverne shows.
Recent single Geraldo’s Farm is the 13th track on Kiran’s debut album, bringing to a close a pseudo-grandiose collection of pieces, which we can refer to as ‘the Sisyphean Everything’, beginning at the 8th track, encompassing around 13 minutes, and covering the Big Little Themes for Discussion: education, solvents, life imitating theatre imitating the circus, interpersonal cynicism, coincidences, water, extra-dimensional life-forms, airport duty free area floor tiles, hatred of ontology, love, war.
‘Geraldo’s Farm offers skittering lo-fi electro weirdness with more going on than bigger bands manage over an entire album’ – Mojo
Kiran played the 6 Music Festival at Victoria Warehouse in early March. He’s previously joined the likes of Ralfe Band, the Wave Pictures and Ezra Furman on live line-ups before his debut headline show, at the Castle in April. With that show selling out in advance, Kiran now returns to the Castle’s sister venue – again joined by his band, featuring members of Plank!, Easter and NASDAQ.
Support comes from Playacting, the solo project of Evan Wilson (Deaf to Van Gogh’s Ear/New Hips – two Manchester math-rock stalwarts). In 2013, he released his debut EP, Pratfalls – a record based around processed beats, vocals, classical guitar, complex string arrangements and dense, layered production. Played live, the songs are pared down to their fundamental parts with just acoustic drums (played by Johnny Winbolt-Lewis of Douga/ex-Plank), vocals, and classical guitar fed through pedals. Wilson is currently working on his second EP with plans for a series of split releases, on Super Smash Hit Records, in the interim.
