When: 7.30pm on Tuesday 27 November – NB: THIS SHOW IS SOLD OUT
Where: Sacred Trinity Church, corner of Chapel Street/Blackfriars Street, Salford M3 5DW
This sorry excuse for a promotions business began back in February 2006 when, horrified that Jens Lekman‘s tour was bypassing the city, we took the plunge and booked a gig ourselves. Things went well: we sold out the Kings Arms in Salford, everyone had a great time and the rest, as they say, is history.
Now we’re proud to welcome Sweden’s 14th most handsome man back to Salford. He’s a legend as far as we’re concerned – mixing witty Sweden-inspired lyrics with unforgettable pop melodies, and all done with the charm of a 60s icon. He’s equally at home playing with a beautiful, talented band or solo and unplugged – and quite often he’ll take his encores outdoors.
Musically, the most obvious comparison is with American crooner Jonathan Richman, though fellow Swedes Herman Dune and Suburban Kids With Biblical Names are worth acknowledging too. Every song is a classic, which is why he calls Secretly Canadian – the label of choice for Songs: Ohia, Antony & The Johnsons and Damien Jurado – his home.
Support comes from Manchester’s own Magic Arm, whose warm, Beta Band-like cycles of folk-pop have themselves been causing a stir lately – check out Outdoor Games on their Myspace.
We’ve picked Salford’s Sacred Trinity Church to host this very special show. It’s just a short walk from Deansgate and the acoustics there are as good as you could hope for. We predict Jens’ll have us all swooning in the aisles in no time.
SORRY, THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT. Tickets were available from WeGotTickets.com, Ticketline.co.uk, Piccadilly Box Office (in EasyInternetCafe, St Anne’s Square) or on 0161 832 1111.
