Hey! Manchester has been invited to curate a stage at this year’s Sounds From The Other City – our fifth outing at the event! SFTOC is a one-day music festival that celebrates the diversity of Greater Manchester’s ‘other city’. The 12-hour event places many of the city’s favourite promoters –  including Mind on Fire, Underachievers, Comfortable on A Tightrope, Trash-O-Rama, Now Wave – into several of our favourite venues and drinking establishments: the Kings Arms, Islington Mill, the Crescent and the Pint Pot’s two-tiered venue. Hey! Manchester is excited to be returning to a very special venue in 2013: Islington Mill.

We’re currently putting the finishing touches to our line-up – one that will to rival our four previous SFTOC outings, which have featured the likes of Willy Mason, Loney Dear, Darren Hayman, Withered Hand, Damon & Naomi, Jesca Hoop, Paul Thomas Saunders and David Thomas Broughton.

Our stage headliner is a special one: Daedelus. Eccentric, Contagious, Electrifying are some of the words you could use to describe LA’s Daedelus. Working in dizzying textured electronica Alfred Darlington – that’s his real name is hardly the atypical Hey! Manchester booking, but somewhere within the melody and loops you can see the logic. Having put out music through Ninatune and various others over the course of a 10 year career, it’s a joy to have him on a SFTOC stage at last.

Born Rosalind Leyden in the leafy-greens of Winchester, Rozi Plain moved to Bristol and then on to London, creating beautifully intricate music that still retains some of the natural world wonder of her origins. She’s toured with Devendra Banhart, James Yorkston and Viking Moses. Having released her latest album on Fence Records last year, we imagine that the gorgeously haunted surrounds of Islington Mill should be an easy fit for her this May.

From Western Australia, Emily Barker is a compelling songwriter with a gift for weaving melody and words. Together with her band The Red Clay Halo, she has recorded three albums, dazzled audiences at music festivals and seen her song Nostalgia become the Bafta-winning theme tune to BBC One drama Wallander starring British actor Kenneth Branagh. Emily recently released a single with friend and collaborator Frank Turner, joined Chuck Ragan and other guests on the five-week European Revival Tour and played a sold out night at London’s Union Chapel with her band in November. She will release her new album, Dear River, in 2013.

Three-piece Liverpool band Bird is the creation of Adele Emmas (singer, songwriter), Sian Williams (guitar, harmonies) and Alexis Samata (drums). Together they create dark, haunting, atmospheric music that will entice you in to their magical, otherworldly universe. With beautiful, siren-esque vocals, tribal, hypnotic drum beats and spell-binding guitar work, Bird are refreshingly unlike anything that’s currently on the music scene. Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins/Bella Union) said of them: ‘Bird are fantastic and they’re destined for great things, we know that already.’

Winnipeg indie pop outfit Boats makes impossibly hooky pop songs about death, being old, girls, glowing bears and escaping the spectral plane of existence and reappearing at a football game — all of which can be found on the band’s sparkling third album, A Fairway Full Of Miners, out earlier this year via Kill Rock Stars (Corin Tucker Band, Elliott Smith, Decemberists, Deerhoof). They sound every bit as fun as one of our favourite bands, Of Montreal!

Denis Jones has, over the past three years, developed a show-stopping live performance based around the core of his exceptional and unique guitar-playing style and rich, soulful voice. Utilising a loop station and all manner of samplers and effects, Denis creates vast, complex orchestrations of beat-box rhythms, multi-layered vocals and other-wordly sounds which veer from subtle heart-wrenching folk and blues to heavy bass-driven electronica.

With their quintessential vintage West Coast sound, it’s fitting that Treetop Flyers laid down their outstanding country soul debut in the canyons of Southern California. Though based in London, the British five-piece swapped urban England for the picturesque beaches and rolling hills of Malibu in order to record The Mountain Moves. The band released their debut EP, To Bury The Past, on Communion and previously scooped the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, as well as coveted tour support with Caitlin Rose.

Born in Malta, raised in Galway and now based in Dublin, Adrian Crowley plays the electric guitar sitting down, rocking it around his waist, and bending the neck to produce a shudderingly sonorous ringing sound. Last year he released his sixth studio album, I See Three Birds Flying, through Chemikal Underground, and continues to play the world over, drawing plaudits wherever he roams.
