Hey! Afternoon Tea with Liz Green

The Portico LibraryHey! Afternoon Tea features a rare trip to the Portico Library & Gallery, one of the city’s true hidden gems. The library, which opened in 1806 and mainly focuses on 19th-century literature, is housed in a Grade II neo-classical listed building designed by Thomas Harrison, architect of the earlier Liverpool Lyceum and a leading exponent of the classical revival of which the Portico is one of the finest examples. The site chosen was ‘the most elegant and retired street in town’, according to John Dalton. Money was raised by subscription and the subscribers became shareholders in the Library. It was an immediate success, combining as it did newsroom, library and club, for members could buy light refreshments on the premises as they still can today.

For this Sunday afternoon event, you will be treated to an introductory talk about the library while you indulge in afternoon tea – including finger sandwiches, a selection of cakes, and loose-leaf tea – provided by Vintage Afternoon Teas.

Liz Green at the Portico Library

The afternoon will conclude with an intimate acoustic set from one of Manchester’s brightest stars, Liz Green. Re-emerging after a three-year lull in releases, Liz releases her long-awaited debut album, O, Devotion!, on Pias in November, preceded by a single, Displacement Song. Backed with a loose, lo-fi take on Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen (as made famous by the Andrews Sisters in the 1930s), the track is released on limited edition vinyl via Liz’s new label, Play It Again Sam.

‘Green effortlessly blends crackled Kath Bloom vocals, smoky 1930s jazz, maudlin oom-pah-pah brass, French chanteusery and kitchen sink lyrics. The resultant noise is a delicate and understated triumph. Wonderful’ – the Guardian

This event is part of CreativeTourist.com’s Manchester Weekender 2011, and features in this year’s Manchester Food & Drink Festival.
