In the past few years 21-year-old Newcastle singer/songwriter Beth Jeans Houghton has garnered a reputation as an antidote to the current crop of acoustic songstresses. With her alternative blend of experimental folk, Beth has been hailed by the NME as ‘a Joni Mitchell for the anti-folk generation‘ while the Observer Music Monthly deemed her a ‘rising star’.
With influences ranging from Frank Zappa, Vashti Bunyan, Fourtet and Love, Beth has cultivated a sound that is truly her own. Since her first performance in 2006 Beth has played alongside a diverse collection of artists such as Jeffrey Lewis, King Creosote, St Vincent, Euros Childs and Diane Cluck among others. While still in her teens, Devendra Banhart invited her to join him on the main stage at Green Man Festival, declaring her ‘a musical magician’.
After vanishing for much of last year, Beth Jeans Houghton is back, with a new song, Dodecahedron, and her debut album on Mute. The album, due for release in Autumn, was recorded with producer Ben Hillier (Blur, Elbow, Depeche Mode, Doves).
‘When she opens her mouth the sound is Vashti Bunyan crossed with Nico and Laura Marling’ – the Guardian
We’re pleased to welcome Stealing Sheep as support. These psych-folk darlings create lo-fi, DIY pop in the shape of noisily drenched old time vocals, spiraling psychedelic guitars, hypnotic beats and sixties style drone synths.
‘Think the rustic new country of Neko Case, múm’s scratchy textures and the lo-fi hooks of Micachu’s DIY pop, and you’re getting warm.’
