We’re delighted to be bringing The Lovely Eggs back to Gorilla!
The Lovely Eggs are an underground surreal-psych punk rock duo from northern England. They have a fierce ethos that music should have no rules. For Holly and David being in a band is a way of life. True to this, they live the way they play. Fiercely, constantly in search of the good times. With 8/10 thumbs up from the NME and much support from BBC 6 Music and Radio One, the band continues to sell out gigs across the UK without the help of management, booking agent or record label support.
With seven BBC 6 Music sessions under their belt, as well as sessions for Radio One and XFM, The Lovely Eggs have enjoyed huge radio. 6 Music’s Marc Riley declared their last three singles I Shouldn’t Have Said That, Drug Braggin and Goofing Around (in Lancashire) his official top tracks of 2015, 2016 and 2017 – with the band also attracting airplay from DJs Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins, Gideon Coe, Shaun Keavney, Radcliffe and Maconie and Jarvis Cocker.
Their songs have been produced by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), remixed by Tjinder Singh (Cornershop) and sampled by Zane Lowe for Scroobius Pip. With releases in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan, The Lovely Eggs have played hundreds of gigs around the UK, USA and Europe.
With observational and often surreal lyrics about life The Lovely Eggs have a powerful stripped down sound: one vintage guitar amp, one Big Muff distortion pedal, a guitar and a drum kit.
They have produced five albums. The latest, This Is Eggland, was produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Mogwai, MGMT, Tame Impala) at his studio in upstate New York. It was released in February 2018 to critical acclaim.
Boasting 5- and 4-star reviews in the national press (including The Independent, Record Collector, Louder Than War, Shindig and Morning Star), the album went straight to Number 9 in the independent album charts. Uncut Magazine described it as ‘Exhilarating and trashy’, the Guardian as ‘marvellous’, plus ‘yes, that good!’ from The Quietus and ‘unrelenting’ from Pitchfork.
Their recent single Wiggy Giggy saw them added to the BBC 6 Music Playlist and the track received massive support from DJs across the board at BBC 6 Music – including This is Eggland being declared Album of The Day.
In February the pair headed out on a 10-date sold out tour of the UK with poet and comedian Phill Jupitus, producing their very own tour zine (to accompany the new album) and playing rammed chaotic shows to an army of growing fans.
The Lovely Eggs are one of the most exciting, innovative and genuine bands on the British Underground Music Scene. Egg-mania is here! Welcome to their world. This Is Eggland!
‘One of the country’s most beloved underground bands’ – NME
You won’t hear another band like this anywhere between now and the the end of the millennium. The Lovely Eggs are just brilliant!’- Huw Stephens, Radio One
Main support comes from Rob Auton. Rob Auton has ideas, writes them down and says them to audiences. He said them to the Lovely Eggs’ audiences in the spring and can’t wait to get back up in front of the Eggheads and say some things he’s thought of. Rob has been standing up and saying what he has thought of to people up, down and across the British Isles since 2008. He has had his poetry and comedy turned into short films and shown on BBC 1, BBC 2 and Channel 4. He has had three collections of writing and illustrations published by Burning Eye Books and a spoken word album released on Scroobius Pip’s record label Speech Development Records.
He has written and performed seven critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe shows. Seven different hours on six specific subjects: 2012’s The Yellow Show, 2013’s The Sky Show, 2014’s The Face Show, 2015’s The Water Show 2016’s The Sleep Show, 2017’s The Hair Show and 2018’s The Talk Show – which was the second best reviewed comedy show at the Edinburgh Festival 2018. Vanessa Feltz called Rob ‘just sad’ after an interview on BBC Radio 2. He has performed his poetry at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Soho Theatre.
‘One of my absolute favourites. He has a pretty special vibe and writes stuff with a uniquely humane perspective’ – Daniel Kitson
Opening the show are Mush. Leeds-based art-rockers Mush have been causing quite the stir on the DIY scene supporting the likes of Rolling Blackouts, Omni, Ulrika Spacek, Drahla and Parquet Courts. Their last single Alt Facts was a favourite of Marc Riley on 6 Music and made it on to the Rough Trade yearly compilation. New single Gig Economy is released on Dipped In Gold Recordings on 14 September.
