When: 7.30pm on Thursday 3 September 2009
Where: Dulcimer, 567 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, Manchester M21 0AE
For a couple of years now we’ve been trying to bring Damon & Naomi to Manchester – and September’s release of a DVD and retrospective compilation (The Sub Pop Years) – has provided us with the perfect opportunity.
Damon & Naomi are an American folk-rock duo formed by Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang, both formerly of Galaxie 500.
After Galaxie 500 completed a tour of the US supporting The Cocteau Twins, guitarist and vocalist Dean Wareham quit the band, forcing the cancellation of an imminent Japanese tour. Damon and Naomi had recorded a few tracks before the split and these were released under the name Pierre Etoile by Rough Trade in 1990. They produced More Sad Hits, their first album as Damon & Naomi, in 1992 and continued to record, releasing four albums on Sub Pop between 1995 and 2002, and two since on their own 20/20/20 label.
This September, The Sub Pop Years compilation and a DVD of live performances and videos are released, alongside a special reissue of all three Galaxie 500 albums.
‘In concerts, Damon and Naomi perform unaccompanied, sound even more bare than their records and just as languorous. They are probably the quietest rock group in the United States‘ – Stephin Merritt, The Magnetic Fields
‘If the soaring arc of Damon and Naomi’s melodies intersecting with Ghost‘s earthly meditations doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, there’s a chance you are already dead. This is mountain-peak listening par excellence‘ – Ben Chasny, Six Organs of Admittance
We’re very pleased to be welcoming Amor de Dias – a new psych-folk/tropicalia superduo featuring Lupe Núñez-Fernández from Pipas and Alasdair Maclean from The Clientele promising both Spanish guitar versions of Clientele songs and new songs from both protagonists!
This show takes place at Dulcimer, Manchester’s celebrated ‘folk bar’ in central Chorlton. Regular buses (85 and 86) run to Chorlton from the city centre, plus the 23 and 23A from Didsbury and West Didsbury and the 168 from Fallowfield. We recommend using GMPTE’s JourneyPlanner to arrange your trip. Tickets for our shows at Dulcimer are also available form the bar itself.
Tickets are available from www.ticketline.co.uk and on 0161 832 1111.
