We’re delighted to be welcoming back Smoke Fairies for our first show at St Phil’s in almost two years!
London duo Smoke Fairies release a double CD of early works entitled Ghosts on 23 September. This retrospective release features their limited, long-sold-out 7″ singles on disc one – the ‘Frozen Heart EP’, their debut single ‘Living With Ghosts’ (the release that caught the ears of Jack White and inspired him to immediately whisk the band to Nashville to record for his Third Man Records label) and the amazing ‘Sunshine’ single. CD two is a bonus disc of early studio sessions from 2007–08. These tracks were only ever sold at gigs or have never been released at all. Included is the sublime ‘Good Man’ along with other early classics, all recorded before their acclaimed 2011 debut album, Through Low Light and Trees.
To celebrate its release and following a sold-out homecoming show earlier in the summer, Smoke Fairies will take the songs from Ghosts on tour this October. The shows will be an enchanting and intimate experience, with instrumental backing provided by pioneers of ‘Cello rock’ Rasputina, all played out in carefully selected venues.
Rasputina, friends of Smoke Fairies since 2011 when they invited the duo to support them on their US tour, have a long history of collaboration. Since forming in the mid-90s, over their six-album career Rasputina have rubbed shoulders and opened for the likes of Marilyn Manson and Robyn Hitchcock, stunning audiences with their theatrical shows. Rasputina’s Melora Creager – who has been described as ‘an incredible, beautiful, challenging, unmissable and truly innovative performer’ – toured with Nirvana on their final tour.
With their soaring vocals, mesmerising guitars and enthralling strings, together Smoke Fairies and Rasputina will create a spellbinding performance, bringing Ghosts alive. Expect goosebumps.
St Philip with St Stephen is one of Greater Manchester’s finest Georgian buildings, dating back to 1825. The building’s Greek style is unique in Salford. It is situated just seconds from Chapel Street and less than a mile from Deansgate.
