We’re delighted to welcome back one of our favourite bands of recent years: Copenhagen’s Efterklang. This, their first visit in 18 months, will have the added twist of being a Hey! Halloween special! Expect short films of a scary nature, DJs and fancy dress – with the best dressed person (as chosen by the band) winning a year-long pass to Hey! Manchester shows.

Efterklang at The Deaf Institute, Manchester

Efterklang (the Danish word for reverberation) are a post-rock/electronica group formed in the Danish capital Copenhagen in 2001. The group consists of five core members. When performing live, these five members are also joined by violinist Peter Broderick, trombonist Niklas Antonson, guitarist Frederik Teige and pianist and singer Anna Brønsted.

They have released albums on the British/American record label The Leaf Label, but also have their own record label called Rumraket (the Danish word for space rocket) – boasting releases by Amiina and Grizzly Bear.

We’d describe Efterklang’s sound as lush, harmonious and cinematic – like Sigur Ros performing with a choir. Other people compare them to Múm, Colleen, Fridge, Broadcast, the Notwist and the Album Leaf, none of which are far off.

Their most recent album, Parades (10/10 – DrownedInSound), coincided with their Manchester debut in 2007. Here’s some feedback on that show:

That was seriously the best gig of the year so far for me – warm and magical

Safe to say that myself and every single person in the crowd left the gig in high spirits and knowing that they had been treated to one very special gig

Also on the bill are Jonquil! This Oxford band are the perfect fit: influenced by the likes of Joan Baez, the Microphones, Akron/Family, Swans and Stars of the Lid, founder Hugo Manuel and his live band play bouzouki, guitar, violin, drums, flugelhorn and double bass. Think Animal Collective at their most sun-dappled, Hood at their most intimate and some stumbled-upon eerie eastern European folk.

Tickets are available from the bar, Piccadilly Records, www.ticketline.co.uk and on 0161 832 1111.

All shows are 18+ unless otherwise stated.
